BORDA Tanzania

In Tanzania, less than 35% of the population has access to improved sanitation. In Dar es Salaam, the largest city in Tanzania, more than 90% of the human and industrial wastewater generated is discharged into open water bodies untreated, leading to groundwater contamination, public health risks, eutrophication and environmental degradation.

BORDA Tanzania was established in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania, in February 2010, with the mission to improve the living conditions of disadvantaged communities and to keep the environment intact through the expansion of sanitation services in the areas of decentralised sanitation, wastewater and solid waste disposal – particularly in challenging urban settings. By doing so, we aim to create sustainable, inclusive and liveable towns and cities.

BORDA supports the development and implementation of disposal and implementation standards for Decentralized Wastewater Treatment Systems (DEWATS). In addition, BORDA promotes effective law enforcement and capacity building of municipal and national stakeholders to address the social and environmental impacts of improved sanitation and improper disposal of human waste.

Our interventions cover several regions and towns, including Dar es Salaam, Zanzibar, Korogwe, Mbeya, Tunduma, Dodoma, Njombe, Iringa, Moshi and Arusha.
