In Tanzania, less than 35% of the population has access to improved sanitation. In Dar es Salaam, the largest city in Tanzania, more than 90% of the human and industrial wastewater generated is discharged into open water bodies untreated, leading to groundwater contamination, public health risks, eutrophication and environmental degradation.
BORDA Tanzania is an international non-governmental and non-profit organisation registered under the Ministry of Health, Community Development, Gender, Elderly and Children with the mission to improve the living conditions of disadvantaged communities and to keep the environment intact through the expansion of sanitation services in the areas of decentralised sanitation, wastewater and solid waste disposal.
We have been operating in Tanzania since 2007. The regional BORDA Africa office in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania was established in February 2010. The regional office coordinates the program activities and facilitates a constantly growing partner network in southeast Africa.
BORDA supports the enactment of disposal and implementation standards for decentralised wastewater and faecal sludge treatment plants (DEWATS) alongside effective law enforcement, to lessen the social and environmental burdens of improved sanitation and improper disposal of human waste.
