BORDA Tanzania

In Tanzania, less than 35% of the population has access to improved sanitation. In Dar es Salaam, the largest city in Tanzania, more than 90% of the human and industrial wastewater generated is discharged into open water bodies untreated, leading to groundwater contamination, public health risks, eutrophication and environmental degradation.

BORDA Tanzania was established in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania, in February 2010, with the mission to improve the living conditions of disadvantaged communities and to keep the environment intact through the expansion of sanitation services in the areas of decentralised sanitation, wastewater and solid waste disposal – particularly in challenging urban settings. By doing so, we aim to create sustainable, inclusive and liveable towns and cities.

BORDA supports the enactment of disposal and implementation standards for decentralised wastewater and faecal sludge treatment plants (DEWATS) alongside effective law enforcement and strengthening capacities of municipal and national actors, to overcome the social and environmental burdens of improved sanitation and improper disposal of human waste.

Our interventions cover several regions and towns, including Dar es Salaam, Zanzibar, Korogwe, Mbeya, Tunduma, Dodoma, Njombe, Iringa, Moshi and Arusha.
