This preparatory project aimed at investigating the WASH Sectors in 4 Sahel countries; i.e. Mauretania, Burkina Faso, Chad and Niger. The investigations were conducted by BORDA in cooperation with international and national consultants. The subsequent regional Sahel program will be implemented by BORDA’s INROs.
Description
Various baseline studies, surveys and workshops were conducted with the aim to understand the respective countries’ WASH sectors and their demands. Additionally, in-depth security assessments were conducted.
Analyses confirmed that demand existed for all countries with the most suitable project conditions in Mauretania. Project implementation activities will take place as of 2024 in Mauritania (Nouakchott) and Burkina Faso (Update: 2024: Activities will be implemented in Senegal instead of BF). Also, BORDA’s ongoing Mali project will be integrated into the regional Sahel program. The regional office and hub for knowledge exchange is envisioned in Senegal’s capital Dakar.
Overarching goals of the SSF program are to improve the living conditions of disadvantaged population groups will to strengthen the capacities of decision makers, by promoting decentralized sanitation and circular economy approaches for the countries’ just transformation and the way towards livable and inclusive cities.
