BORDA West Africa operates in Senegal and Mauritania, with a regional office in Dakar, Senegal.
In this region our work began in July 2024 with the official registration of its regional office in Dakar. BORDA addresses critical challenges such as inadequate sanitation infrastructure, environmental degradation, and economic vulnerability, particularly in rapidly urbanizing areas. These challenges are exacerbated by a lack of proper waste management and recycling facilities, leading to significant public health risks and environmental damage.
To combat these issues, BORDA West Africa is actively involved in building and expanding decentralized sanitation services. One of our key initiatives includes the establishment of demonstration plants that recycle wastewater and organic waste into valuable resources like biogas and compost. These facilities not only mitigate environmental pollution but also provide practical solutions for sustainable waste management.
A cornerstone of our strategy is working closely with local communities, government agencies, and other stakeholders. Our regional office in Dakar, Senegal, serves as a coordination hub, ensuring that our projects are tailored to meet the specific needs of the region. This collaboration facilitates the integration of our efforts into existing local structures, enhancing the effectiveness and sustainability of our interventions. We also focus on providing comprehensive training and capacity-building programs for local stakeholders, including municipal officials, sanitation workers, and community leaders, to develop local expertise in sanitation management.
Community collaboration is vital to our success. By engaging with local authorities, NGOs, and private sector partners, we ensure that our solutions are community-driven and address the unique challenges faced by each area. Our initiatives promote recycling and reuse practices, laying the groundwork for a circular economy that benefits both the environment and the economy. This inclusive approach fosters a sense of ownership and responsibility among community members, which is crucial for the long-term sustainability of our projects.
The economic opportunities generated by these initiatives are significant. By supporting local businesses involved in the recycling process and developing new industries around sustainable practices, we help create jobs and stimulate local economies. This economic boost not only supports individual livelihoods but also strengthens the overall resilience of the communities we serve.
Ultimately, BORDA West Africa’s efforts contribute to a sustainable sanitation situation in the region. Our work helps to protect local ecosystems, reduce the environmental impact of waste disposal, and ensure that communities have access to safe and clean sanitation facilities. Supported by the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ), these projects align with the Sustainable Development Goals, particularly SDG 6 (clean water and sanitation), and promote a sustainable, circular economy in West Africa.
